About Rocket MkII
Rocket MkII is a modernised boat building kit based on the original design of Rocket by William Jackson. The design is for an inboard engined 15ft stepped hull Gentleman’s race boat with a two seater cockpit aft. For more details about the plan set please take a look at the Rocket MkII 15ft Stepped Hull Gentleman’s Racer Boat Plans.
The Boat Building Kit
All of my boat building kits are cut to order, therefore I can make them in your specified materials. You can choose what you would like included and select recommended materials in the drop down boxes above, the price will then be shown. For prices on alternative materials please feel free to Contact Me. Plan files include the documentation and assembly drawings for the boat. If you would like to look through these before committing to buying a kit then they are available to purchase here and the cost can be discounted against the kit if you decide to go ahead. Have a look through the tabs to the left for a more detailed explanation of the standard material options available.
Buying From Overseas
My boat building kits are currently only available to buy within the UK and must be collected from my workshop. However I am looking to establish a network of distributors for kits in other countries to be able to provide them worldwide. If you are interested in becoming a distributor for these kits then please contact me for more information.
The idea behind my boat building kits is that they will be cut by suppliers in various countries around the world, selecting your region means that your order will be forwarded onto a supplier near to you so that your kit can be collected or shipped locally.
All UK orders for kits are currently being cut by myself and can be collected from my workshop in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
USA, Canada, Europe, Rest of the World
I am looking to set up suppliers in various other countries to provide boat building kits for sale. If you have the facilities to be able to produce these kits and would like to become a supplier then please contact me for more information.
The frames are the core of the kit and I recommend buying them as a minimum to get the best out of the build. The frame pack includes all frame components, CNC cut and engraved from solid wood. Gussets are included and are cut in marine grade Gaboon Plywood. The frame construction board in melamine faced MDF and the construction forms in standard MDF are also included.
Frames and Long Timbers
Stringers are all the “long timbers” needed to build the boat. These are supplied in dimensioned full lengths with some overrun which may be used up in the rest of the build. This comprises of the keel timbers, including the stem, chines, gunwhales, floor, side and deck battens.
Note that in order to make transportation more straight forward it may be more beneficial to source these timbers from your local supplier and have them delivered directly.
Kits are available in Sapele (mahogany), White Oak or Douglas fir as standard. White oak frames are recommended for higher powered boat builds.
Skins include the bottom, sides and deck for the boat. These are available either in CNC cut marine grade Gaboon Plywood or as veneer packs for cold moulding. Note that veneers will be supplied as a total running meterage with overrun accounted for.
The construction pack contains many of the additional products you will need in order to complete the boat and approximately enough to get you up to the stage of final finishing in your choice. The consumables pack contains the following:
- 12kgs 105/206 West System epoxy
- 301B West System pump set
- 275g 406 West System colloidal silica
- 700g 407 West System low density filler
- Silicone Bronze fastenings for all frames and stringers
- 5L Jotun Penguard HB epoxy primer
