Epifanes Clear Coat and Wood Finish Matte
Quote from Lynda Beetham on 2nd November 2023, 3:58 pmMy husband and I are re-fitting our 1983 46-foot Seamaster sailboat. All of the interior trim is teak. Most of the original varnish needs to be stripped and re-done. Can I use Epifanes Clear Coat for the build-up coats and then Wood Finish Matte for the final coats?? We have decided to use a matte finish, as it is more forgiving to imperfections, and we like the cozy look of the finish. I am questioning my methods after listening to you discuss the Wood Finish Matte as being breathable for teak. Am I ruining that breathability by putting Clear Coat on first??

Yes you can use the wood finish matte for the final coat. This can be used over other existing finishes but yes, building coats with another base product will remove the breathable properties provided by the wood finish product. This will also be the case if you build in excess of 6x coats of wood finish.
Something to consider, is breathability something you want to retain? I would imagine that for interior trim work you probably don’t need to retain breathability.
Have you tried or seen the rubbed effect varnish? This is lovely for a subtle finish for interiors and also hides imperfections slightly. If you are wanting to build coats quickly and finish with a non gloss finish then PP varnish or Rapid clear for build up followed by rubbed effect is quite a winning combination.
