Exterior Keel Or Not?
Quote from Mike on 1st September 2025, 5:20 amHi Guys,
I am now just starting to ply the hull of the Playboy MK2 and was wondering if the performance and and stability of the boat would be enhanced if I was to add an exterior protruding keel from say half way to the transom and obviously tapering from nothing to say 125mm at the transom. The hull just appears very flat and I wonder if that would cause the boat to slide on cornering? See photo of the rear half of the hull.

The boat is looking great!
This will depend a little on what type of use the boat is going to get. If this will be on wide open lakes etc then you should be fine, but you will see the boat slide sideways a fair amount in higher speed turns. Fine and quite fun if you have the space. With my boat I did a lot of tight manoeuvring and river use and so I had various versions of a keel. I started with not much at all, then put a full tapered keel on the boat which was a bit too much and I progressively cut this down as I did more high speed use with the boat.
I would probably recommend going with something like a fairly small turn fin instead of a full keel as it will give the best of both worlds.

Thanks for that, what sort of dimensions for the turn fin would you recommend and I assume it would be mid mounted?
