Rocket mk2

Hi, I’m just in the process of starting to build the boat rocket. I was lucky enough to buy the project that Dan made for YouTube. It would be nice to hear from any one else who is building the same type of boat.
It seems that I can only download one picture at a time.

I would love to see someone on the Forum build the Rocket,  Larry B.

I will upload some pictures of my progress as I go through the build it maybe a few weeks before I have anything worth posting.

Great Terrence, I would very much appreciate any photos of your build. I have the plans also, 😊, Larry.

Hi Terence,

I have just downloaded the plans for Playboy MK2 Gentleman Racer Version. I know, not the same as Rocket MK2, but in my opinion, very similar. I was going to build the Rocket Mk2, but really wanted to build an outboard boat for my first project as inboard motors looked a bit daunting and rather expensive. I don't know if you have experienced the same as me, but I am a little under whelmed by what I have down loaded. There appears to be no plans for the strong back and I haven't found any details regarding the stringers etc. Also no real bill of material or plans for other things like the dash board, flooring, seats, windscreen etc. I guess you just make what you want. I'm intending to move the cockpit slightly further forward to create a larger area, that will hopefully include a curved rear bench seat.  Where are you up to so far?

Kind Regards

Mike

I’ve found that the best way for me is to watch some u tube videos of similar parts being put together and then  that gives me the confidence I need to get out to the workshop and do a small area although there is a lot of time spent scratching my head .Hopefully in the end it  looks something like a boat .

ps :boatbuilding  with plywood by Glen L is worth getting hold of .

Hi all, I have just completed Rocket. I stretched her 10% to 16.5 ft and with the transom hung rudder is a bit over 17.

I will be selling her on the auction web site Bringatrailer.com

Here are a few pictures.

You've made a lovely job of that Richard, thank you for sharing some pictures! I really like the addition of the raised deck and I'm sure the boat will benefit well from the additional length. I hope your sale goes well.

Cheers
Dan

WOW!!! Mr. Crowe, fantastic job! Might you have any pictures of the build process? Love the motor choice. Truely remarkable. Thanks for sharing.

That’s gorgeous Richard, 👏 you should Be very proud of yourself to achieve such a beautiful boat I’m sure you will find someone that will fall in love with it and buy it.

Thanks for the kind words. When the auction goes live I will post it to the group.

Here are a few pictures of the build.

Masterpiece. You must be proud. Yes, please let us know when the listing goes up. Are you in the United States Mr. Crowe? Is that where the boat will be for sale? I live on the East Coast in New Jersey.

Lovely build Richard, you must be very pleased with the outcome.

Hi all, yes I live in the US on the west coast in California. The website is called bring a trailer as it was originally intended for old car buffs. It has now become international and you can bid on every exotic vehicle imaginable, boats are not their primary purpose but are becoming more common. It will probably be a week or more before the auction goes live, I will let you know when it does.

Cheers,

Richard

Richard, did you extend the Rocket so you could more easily fit the engine? I have heard of guys extending their boats to accommodate an engine and velvet drive. Was it hard to find that marine engine and how did everything line up for you installing it?

Hi Larry, I extended the boat for a couple of reasons,

1. you can lengthen a boat by 10%  without any engineering just by spacing the frames out.

2. This gives a better beam to length ratio, longer and narrower for an easier driven hull.

3. Also knowing that the engine weighs over 700 lbs I felt a slightly larger boat could handle the weight better.

Hope that answers your question.

As far as the choice of engine , I wanted something period correct for the 1946 design . The engine is from 1954 so close enough. I bought an old boat just for the engine and hardware and gave the boat and trailer away. I have another engine if you are interested.

Best,

Richard

Mr. Crowe, I appreciate you letting me know of the spare engine being sold but I have to pass at this time. Are you closer to listing the Rocket on Bring A Trailer?

Hi Larry, the engine is free but we live on opposite coasts so shipping would be the main thing. It is complete except for plugs and wires.

The auction should begin this weekend, will let the group know.

best

Richard

Hi Guys-

The boat auction for Redhead just went live!

No Reserve: 17′ Wood Hydroplane

Please have a look and maybe make a comment or ask a question to build some buzz?

This exposure could be good for all modern boat building and maybe mention Dan Lee's design work.

There over one hundred pictures of the boat building process on the website.

Cheers, Richard

Looks really great Richard! I have shared this on my social media which will hopefully generate a bit of traffic. Wishing you all the best on the sale and I'll keep an eye on things over the next week 🤞

Makes me want to build another racer... best finish the one I am doing first 😆

Cheers
Dan
