Selecting the right boat
Quote from Christian on 25th June 2025, 6:21 pmHello All,
I'm a new forum member hoping to start a build by the end of 2025. I'm a hobbyist woodworker but have absolutely zero boatbuilding or even boating experience. Since I'm less intimidated by the woodworking as I am by literally everything else, I want to start with an outboard motor boat, so I'm looking at Playboy MkII. But I live on an artificial lake in SoCal that has a speed limit of 5mph, so the boat would never get on plane. Sorry for the stupid question, but would this be a boating faux paus? I don't want any bad juju because I'm not letting the boat fulfill its destiny!
Another rule on the lake where I live is that all engines run on electric power. I'm tentatively planning to use an ePropulsion Navy series outboard motor. Good idea or bad idea?
Thanks,
~ Christian

a bientôt,
Tony

Thank you for your kind reply!
It makes me feel better to know that the only real downside will be increased energy consumption. The lake where I plan to use the boat is tiny, so I'll never be too far from home!
I saw the progress update of your Playboy build that you shared last month and will continue follow your progress with interest, so please keep posting!
Kind regards,
~ Christian

Welcome to the forum! Playboy will be a good candidate for this scenario, when I built mine most of its use was on the Thames river which has a 5mph speed limit and it was great for that. I originally ran a 3hp motor on the boat, then an 18hp and then a 33hp. Electric would be a great option and had it been available at the time I would have probably chosen that as well.
Cheers
