Temptress Build
Quote from Andrew Burdon on 9th January 2023, 1:30 pmDan.
I've just purchased your temptress study plans.
First order of business' for me is to get a quote for all the wood parts.
Question.
On the timber cut list sheet. Can you confirm that the Mahogany CNC parts you have listed as "22.25mm CNC cut components" are all the CNC frame parts?
Reason I'm asking, is I intend to use a different wood other than Mahogany for the frames.
after I purchase the full plan and start the build I'll keep this forum up to date with progress photos and build information.
on a side note. if your ever updating your study plan drawings. Could you please add the material thickness to all your part lists. As this will make it far easier to understand the build.
Regards
Andrew.
Tasmania.

Hi Andrew, yes all of the 22.25mm CNC parts are all the major framing components. Bottoms, sides, deck beams and fillers (the fillets at the chines and keel). This also includes all beams for the hatch framing.
Thanks for the note on the material thicknesses. I will roll that out in the next update of these.
Looking forward to seeing your build progress.

Quote from Bob Kody on 22nd January 2023, 9:08 pmHi Andrew - Best of luck with the Temptress build. I have started as well. As Dan mentioned, I am documenting the build in YouTube. Just posting my 4th video today (Cutting the Frame Gussets).
https://www.youtube.com/@Polymerman
As an FYI only, I have ordered Sapele for my frames and am having the boards planed to 7/8 inch thick, which equals 22.225 mm thick. I am in the USA and my lumber supplier does not work in metric.

Your videos are great. I'll look forward to watching your build progress.
I think I'm also going to use Sapele for the frames. Mahogany is impossible to get here.
I'm still a few months away from getting the full set of plans and making a start.
What engine are you thinking about using ?
At this stage I'm going to use this.

(But that may change as I do more research).

Great video Bob, that shaker is a brilliant bit of kit!
Regarding material thickness, everything in Temptress is actually derived from imperial, as Michel designs in inches, the models come to me and I work in mm. However although our units here in the UK are metric, all of our timber sizes are still based around imperial therefore you can translate between timber stock without any effect on things. 22.225 to 7/8' for example. Also for any of the ply or particle board sheets, the closest imperial size is fine.

Andrew - At this point, I plan to use the Ilmor that Dan Lee has planned:
Truth be told, by the time I get far enough along to buy an engine, I am hoping that electric motors and batteries have advanced enough to be feasible.

PS – Video 5 is in the editing stage.. probably release on Feb 12th. The attached photo shows the ShaperTool cutouts of frames 4 & 9.

its great to see you moving onto the frames.
also a brilliant video showing you using the ShaperTool. hopefully it gets more people into making boats.
I'm looking forward to the next video.
I've just about got all the costing done, I'm still looking at getting the full set of plans and staring by the end of march.
as soon as I get the final pricing for the Sapele timber I'll post it here as we can both complain about the cost of wood these days.
I'm going to cold mold the internal layers with plywood and just do the outer layer in Sapele.here the costs for the marine ply in Tasmania.

Quote from Bob Kody on 4th February 2023, 9:34 pmHi Andrew – I am actually working in Sydney this week. So cheers!
Yes, wood is expensive. In the USA, I paid USD $2,016 for all of the plywood and MDF needed for the frames, chines and strongback. I also paid $1,877 for 173 board feet of 7/8” thick Sapele lumber (surfaced 3 sides = S3S). All included ~7% sales tax.
I actually paid >$850 for the two CNC’d Melamine boards. The outsourced CNC work was so expensive that I researched and purchased the ShaperOrigin.
Best of luck to you. Can’t wait to see your progress and learn from you.

hope your enjoying the Australian summer weather.
CNC is very expensive.
I got a CNC kit from these guys https://www.makerstore.com.au/product-category/cnc-machining/
around $2500 for a CNC that can cut a 4' x 6' ply sheet. (+ the cost of a router 🙂

$850 for the two melamine boards?!? That sounds incredibly expensive Bob! I generally charge £50 per sheet to CNC cut something like that. It's a shame I'm not closer to you.

I like the Benny Hill music! Very clever. I have subscribed to your Youtube channel. Very enjoyable and informative videos. Really kicking the idea of doing “ROCKET”. I actually have an old print plan hanging in the living room of the boat next to some pictures of my great grandfather who built himself a wooden runabout using an old Cadillac motor way back. Stay cool guys, Larry.

New member and have just purchased the plans from Dan. Awesome quality plans and are so much better than other plans on the market.
I'm researching the details at the moment, have a local CNC machinist and good source for African Mahogany. I'm based in Singapore but relocating to Perth/Western Australia sometime in the next 12 - 18 months.
This is definitely a "queued" project as I have another couple on the go at the moment that need to be finished before I get too immersed in it all 🙂
Will keep you all posted on my progress over the coming weeks.

no photos yet. I'm still waiting on final quote for the Sapele timber to arrive.
I've found a local company that can re-saw the 25mm timber into 6mm boards for the final external layer.
they only loose 1.3mm per board, so I should be able to get 3 boards per 25mm stock timber
I'll post the cost of the Sapele once I get the quote.
I'm still hoping to buy the plans and start building by the end of March.
in the mean time here's some boat building p0rn.
A 12.5ft stand up paddle board, I've just finished.
