Temptress - likely build cost at 2023 prices?

Hi guys,

As I mentioned in my 'intro' post, I have a long term ambition to build a Temptress, as a sort of semi-retirement project, to use when I am happily fully retired. I am in my early 50s, so am in no immediate hurry to build, and I am prepared to take my time.

I am trying to work out a rough budget, in GBP sterling terms, for the complete self-build with the recommended Ilmor 5.3 GDI engine. I'm thinking of up to £40,000. Would I be in the right ballpark, at 2023 prices? I'm not expecting anyone to share their detailed budget (but if you want to, that would be great!) I'm just trying to work out a rough budget. I will probably only build a boat once, so want to use quality materials and quality hardware.

Thanks in advance for any insight. If I need to reset my expectations, no problem.

Hi Pete,

I am also looking into the journey to building Temptress. I'm just at the beginning so can not directly help you with an estimate of building costs. Do you also want to include the costs of the tools (described by you as quality hardware)?

First I will follow Bob (Polymerman Boatbuilding) and Serdar Bas. Hope to learn from them 🙂

Hi Davy

Thanks for the reply. By hardware, I mean all the non-wooden and non-epoxy components. In the description of the boat, it states "The hardware pack shown has been designed to complement the boats lines and present classic styling, plans for these items will be available to buy separately shortly." I took that to mean the windscreen, all the chromework, the dashboard and gauges, et cetera. I would include engine, gearbox, steering components in "hardware".

I am not too worried about the tools as I would use them on other projects and compared to the price of the engine, I am sure they will not cost too much

Hi Pete and others.

I have not fully estimated the cost to build Temptress.  Two reasons:

1) If I did, I would never have started it.  And I would regret that for life.

2) This will take me many years.  I will likely outsource the engine and metal/vinyl detailing.  And I really want to spend a fortune in a large electric motor when the time comes. I’m

That said, I am keeping track of my spend.  To date I have all the supplies to get the boat on the strongback, with stem, stringers, chines and keel in place.  I need to buy more epoxy.

My spend to date:

- Lumber/wood: $7,059

- Total Required wood & supplies: $8,751

- Burboun and Beer for helping friends; $425

I am happy to share any information of interest to you.

Thank you Bob, that is very much appreciated. I am following your YouTube channel (I have just subscribed)....the channel is really helpful, please keep up the great work, I really value it.

I really appreciate the information above. If you are able to post the major costs of the completed cold-molded hull as you go, that would be really helpful.

That's a lot of beer and bourbon, btw! 🙂

Thanks Pete.  I appreciate your subscribing.  It is a really fun project for me.   And with Dan’s help, I gain more confidence with each step.

After I assemble the Strongback, I will publish a short video detailing my costs.  I will also add them to the DLBB forum.

Finally in boat building,  bourbon is like clamps, you can never have enough.

Best of luck.

Bob

Good morning, first post here…  Based upon my experiences building a Glen-L Tahoe 21′, I would estimate that to finish the Temptress to a high degree you’re easily in the range of $90,000 to $100,000 USD.   Savings could be had by utilizing a power plant other than the Ilmor or repurposing used equipment, but if you’re going to these lengths I would be disappointed with anything less..

Thanks for your reply Ted. I wanted to see what a Glen-L Tahoe 21 looked liked, and immediately found your YouTube video of when you flipped the boat over during build. That looked fun!

Yes, I have revised my estimate somewhat northwards.

I'm enjoying watching Dan build his full size Temptress; I get workshop envy with every new video. It's going to be beautiful when finished.

Love it! There are some test run videos there worth checking out and on the water stuff below..
