Tiling and choice of wood

Hi,

Thank you Dan for your forum and videos, been following your work quite a while already. I have since April every fourth week off from work, and am considering one of your builds for those weeks as a hobby.

I have yet to purchase an CNC, been looking for options. One I have been looking most is the Onefinity, but they are not full sheet capable but only about 1500mm*1500mm. So tiling with the toolpaths would be only option, do you Dan or anybody else have an opinion if the accuracy would be sufficient? It would need bit more planning anyway, because as an computer/cad enthusiastic I would like to make use of CNC as much as possible same way than you Dan do.

Other question concerns choice of wood. I have pine, spruce and birch available from own forest, but that is about all the choice I have except some odd adler-trees. How much could I use those if I would outsource just the marine ply? I was thinking that maybe I could replace the wooden parts with spruce, and if needed I could make one complete part from thinners parts by epoxy clueing them to form one “solid” wood part. Any comments or issues, or would the strength of spruce be enough as it is? If needed, I can find african wood here in Finland, but it is quite expensive compared and would prefer local wood wherever that is possible.

Best Regards,

Hi Tomi

That sounds like the perfect opportunity to get started on a boat build!

Tiling is potentially an option although it will make things a little more difficult of course and increase the potential for errors in the cutting process. The frame construction board in particular is something where you don't want a shift in the arrangement of the holes with reference to each other. That will cause you issues that will run out through the whole rest of the build.

Spruce would be ok for this build, that would personally be my choice out of what you have listed there.

Cheers
Dan
