Hello Dan, I am glad to be here learning about finishing woods with varnish. I used to be a paint sprayer, refinishing cars, vans, bikes etc but now I make electric guitars from scratch as I have an interest in woodworking and electric guitars. I really enjoy getting finishes to an ultra high gloss and I’m here to learn how to use new (to me) methods, processes and products to achieve that. I haven’t done any boat building or worked on any boats in my life but there is a first time for everything right? I will be able to use the skills I learn on this course and transfer them to my guitar making. I have recently moved to the west coast of Scotland to be near family (my sister) and she is married to a great lad who is a yacht rigger. Who knows where this course could lead me? One step at a time though eh?

Hi Jack, great to have you onboard! It's interesting to hear that the course has an outreach beyond boat building. Lets hope it inspires you to end up building your first boat, it sounds like you have a perfect skill set for it 🙂

Hi all,

Like Jack, I too am learning about finishing wood to a high standard.

I'm currently restoring an Achilles 9m, which has a lot of wood in it (and I'm adding more).

However I'm also restoring a WW1 wood and fabric aircraft to get flying, which will require varnishing (although likely to be an epoxy varnish that won't react with the chemicals from the fabric covering, and weight needs to be considered too).

Working and all this means that there's not enough time in the day!

Jason.

My name is Kai and I am currently working in a Boatyard east of Berlin Germany.

I am not a native speaker of English – so please be patient with me.

It’s been a while I have finished the varnishing course – but I now come to the forum now and then to see the topics.

Hope we all develop a great community of work and fun as well as deepening knowledge.

Cheers Kai
