Welcome!

Hello all and welcome to the new DLB boat builders forum. Please feel free to introduce yourself, ask questions and share any projects that you are currently working on related to building any of my boat designs.

Hello everyone, new here, really thinking of doing Dan Lee’s Rocket, the gentleman’s racer. It will be a very big decision for me. I only have a one car garage and that has my classic car stored in it. Would have to sell the car to make room for the Rocket build and also provide funding for the boat build.                                                                                     This would be my first crack at building a real boat. I have only done some mahogany scale models , 1/6 scale, radio controlled. I like how Dan Lee has made available a wealth of information on Rocket. I have only begun to do my research of the gentlemans racer build about a week ago, lots more to learn I am sure. Anyway, thats my story, will keep you guys in the know as to how I make out. Hello everyone! Dan Lee, I just saw you have the plans for Rocket on sale. If I converted right, the sale price would be $179.42 for USD. How long are you planning on running the sale? Also I have some questions regarding engines available here in the states for Rocket. I want to use a period engine and would like your thoughts of what I could obtain here readily in the US.  Are there any plans for you to do more episodes of building Rocket past the last episode of the production boat build on the strongback? I think last episode was 6. Anyway Dan, thanks for all you have done for the boat hobby and making available a way for the beginner to get started on a classic gentlemans racer, Larry B

Hi Larry

I think based on a google conversion the plans would be around $180 at the moment. The current sale will run until the 10th March.

Small, marine petrol engines are not that common, the key with Rocket is not to overpower the boat or put too much weight in her fwd. Something like a 1.5-2L straight 4 petrol is an ideal engine.

I am not currently planning to do anymore videos in the MkII build series, the plan for that was really just to take it up far enough to show how the plans and their methodology work. Currently in the pipeline is a 1/4 scale Temptress build in which I will show the entire build process at 1/4 scale, at that size it will be done exactly the same at the full size boat. This is however alongside work so I'll only be able to get onto it when I have a break in my time.

Thanks Dan for your response. I recently received my issue of “RUDDER” magazine, a publication of ACBS or Antique Classic Boat Society here in the United States. I saw the ad for EPIFANES varnish with your endorsement of their products. Great varnish! Keep up the good work, Larry B.

Hi everyone, new member here.

My name is Pete and I live in Jersey, Channels Islands, Great Britain. I've got my eye on building a Temptress as a 'semi-retirement' project, but not for a few years yet. I'm here to live vicariously through you guys initially, watching and learning from your builds, but I hope to get round to my build in the next few years.

I would be building a boat for use in light seas in the coastal waters around the Channel Islands. That's the dream, anyway.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Dan, this is Ulf from Germany. Great work and excellent YouTube videos, quite motivating 🙂 Just one question: plans use metric or imperial system ?

Cheers

Ulf

Had a closer look into the videos: so plans seem to be defined in metric system.

Hello Ulf, welcome!

Yes plans are drawn in metric although they are based around standard timber sizes, derived from imperial measurements so they do convert freely if needed.

Hi guys

Sorin here from Sweden. Actually a car and motorcycle guy but with a new job at the Swedish Coast Guard I thought building my own boat would have been fun. I have mostly worked with metal and fiberglass in my projects, but wood seems like a nice material to work with. A while ago surfing on the internet I found the Hermes Speedster and fell in love immediately until I heard the price. Then after a bit more searching I found Temptress and all of a sudden Hermes had competition. I’m here to gather knowledge and hopefully when I’m done with my current project I can start building a Temptress.

Cheers

Hello Sorin

Welcome along and by all means ask any questions you might have!

Wood is certainly a nicer material to work with than metal or fibreglass, I guess I am a bit biased though 🙂

Sorin- i think i will try my hand at the temptress as well.  I did look up the Hermes speedster and wonder if there is a way to add the back dock (not sure what it’s called - the place you can get in and out of the water) into the temptress build?  Thanks

My best recommendation for something like that would be to add a swim platform or boarding ladder onto the transom, either could be done easily and I could assist with designing it. Anything further would involve quite major reconstruction of the transom structure which I wouldn't recommend.

Hello fellow hobbyists, pros and other builders!

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Benjamin (or just Ben) a 58 yr old boy from Holland. With a lot of memories of my late father, who has build a few different type of boats during his life and remembering how impressed I was by him, and also a lot of time to spend due to my health. I decided to start building a RC scale Viking longship!

Now I have only a few hurdles to take, I never build anything in wood (or anything else for that matter) and I’ve a tiny knowledge of CAD-CAM, or cnc routing or engineering (needed to build a rowing system for 38 working rowers!)

This is where I was at last year, in the meanwhile I got a 3D printer for making the rowers (there I’m well on my way the construct a articulated model that I’ve bought the .stl files for), a Neje Max4 lasercutter to cut the keel and boardings in 3mm plywood and, just recently a Twotrees TTC450Pro for the trusses other wooden fittings.

So now I’m here, without a clue how to work things out in deep, starting knowledge of Fusion 360 and therefore feeling lucky to have found my way here to Dan Lee’s course!

That looks awesome, thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing more!

Hi Dan,

I'm about half way through my build of Playboy MK2, but have amended it to be a five seater, so now not really a Gentlemans Racer. I have video documented the build to date and have full costing so far. Would love to be able to upload the video files, but the upload size and type is not adequate. Any suggestions on how to get them on the forum, if you thought they would be useful?

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike

The forum would not really support video hosting as it would take up too much space. I would recommend hosting a video on something like YouTube or Vimeo which could then be shared on here via an embed link. Build sounds great, it would be nice to see it.

Cheers

Hi

mike from canada

in early stages of my Glen-L Flying Saucer build using Mohagany and west system epoxy in my garage

its a 12.5 foot wooden runabout.  Will be powered by a 30hp short shaft

wanted to get it right the first time so excited to learn about methods, products and techniques

as winter is setting in, I want to be sure I understand temperature and humidity requirements as well

Hi Mike

That sounds great, there's nothing quite like settling in for a boat build over winter. Feel free to share pictures and ask questions if needed.

Cheers
