Staining products

Hi,

Based on the staining lesson I have a few questions:

For staining of bare wood:

  • what are suggested products for : spirit based staining?
  • are they available in different colour shades or do you need to arrange that yourself?
  • can you use these products also if a two component system is used on top of it?

For staining existing wood:

  • what are suggested products?
  • I assume there are different products to be used for 1 and 2 component build up, or not?

Thank you!

For those interested: the cabin of our boat was originally bare-wood-stained and now also has been stained on existing layers. This has been professionally done with a 2 component build up. I tried it once myself outside under a tent, but this was no success :-). Recently everything has been lacquered again without staining and there are now quite some decolorisation spots due to sunlight.  Not a real problem for me now, but I'd like to know what to do next time myself. Hence this course.

Hi Martin

The products I like to use for staining are made by Morrells, they make a great range of colours with about 7 in the Mahogany category alone. They can also be blended to get things just right. In one of my projects I blended rich mahogany with pure red for a bit more "heat".

Epifanes make a very nice classic mahogany spirit stain. Very similar in colour to how your boat looks. They only do the one colour though which is a bit limiting.

Most spirit based stains, all that I have tried anyway. Are compatible with both single and two part systems both applying over the stain and mixing it with the varnish. Although if mixing I highly recommend doing some small tests first!

If applying to bare wood, remember the clothing off process after the first application to lock in that colour without causing pooling or streaking in the finish.

All in all, I use spirit based stains for all my applications. I am not a fan of staining over existing finishes but realise that sometimes it needs to be done. Just remember to be careful of consistent film thickness both when applying and sanding.

This is the product that I use: Morrells | Light Fast Wood Stains I am not sure if they are available outside of the UK though, there may be some issues with shipping solvents outside of the UK.
